Geology Guide for About.com, longtime member of the Well and a champion of Oakland, California. I used to be deeply into music but have no more time to listen. I'm one of those guys who has to drop everything when music comes on, which means I can't work or write. I do listen to the wonderful spare midi music my wife composes for www.chez-fleur.com, but some of it makes me cry. So did the show when Jerry Garcia came back from his hospitalization. I love Oakland A's baseball too, though it hardly ever makes me cry. When Rickey Henderson was called out of left field in the eighth inning, his last game in Oakland--that was one time. Yeah, I'm sentimental.
Where was I? I'm here to read and talk about geology. I've almost never been a geologist, although as a technical editor in the USGS I got a chance to do some research for a few days near Alsek Bay in southeastern Alaska, plus log data on a few research cruises in the Gulf of Alaska. As the geology guy on About.com, I get to be my own boss, and he makes me drive around California, mostly, with my hammers and magnifiers and maps. That's nice. I can listen to old tapes on the road.
